Description

A beautifully-defined hunting dog, sturdy and good-looking with a proud carriage.

Head

The muzzle is pointed, the stop clearly defined.

Eyes

Dark

Erect; triangular; set high on the head

Tail

Curved over its back, to the side

Body

Short, muscular neck; deep chest and a retracted abdomen

Coat

Double-coated, with a light undercoat and short smooth outer coat

Colour

Brownish-red or yellowish-red; white markings to chest, feet and under tail are acceptable.

Sizes

Dogs height 43.2-50.8 ccm (17-20 in), bitches height 39.3-45.7cm (15.5-18 in) weight 11.4-13.6kg(25-30lb).

Origin

The national breed of Finland, where it was bred for hunting and as a watchdog on farms; its standard was set at the beginning of the nineteenth century and although introduced into Britain in 1927, it is still not recognized in America.

Personality

Loyal and courageous, their friendliness is deceptive as they are first-rate guard dogs.
