A compact, short-legged hound with heavy bone structure

Head

Large, well-proportioned, with a dome-shaped skull; the skin on the head is loose-fitting, forming folds; the nose is black

Ears

Hang down like pendulums and big enough to reach beyond the tip of the nose if pulled forwards

Tail

Slightly curved, carried gaily

Body

Prominent breastbone, but not a deep chest; powerful neck and pronounced dewlap

Coat

Short, smooth but not too fine

Colour

All hound colours are acceptable

Sizes

Height 33-38.1cm (13-15in); weight 18.2-22.7kg(40-50lb)

Origin

First shown in Paris in 1863, it was recognized in Britain as early as 1883, and by the American Kennel Club in 1964

Personality

Mild, friendly and affectionate; a good-natured companion dog; sometimes inclined to being slow and stubborn
