Each and every petowner feels that his pet must behave well and respond quickly to his commands. Training your dog is necessity. Just like children, dogs come into the world filled with love and curiosity, but with least manners. Hence they need to be taught behaving properly in the house, feeding habits, controlling aggressiveness, reacting to different people and other animals. This is a demanding, yet enjoyable job that begins the moment the dog enters your house and your life.

Training makes your pet’s life easier and enjoyable. By nature, dogs prefer a society with rules. When you teach the dog the rules of your family, they feel secure knowing exactly what they are and what they are not allowed to do. Dogs will test you from time to time, to see if anything has changed. That's one reason it's so important to keep the same rules and the same schedules every day.

You as a trainer

Petowner can give little bit of training but it is betterto get trained by professional trainers. Your most important tool is “positive reinforcement” getting the dog to do what you want with praise and reward. The other two critical tools are patience and firmness (never harshness). You must be confident while training, and you must be consistent. Your goal is to get the dog to respond to your request, delivered once, in a cheerful, business-like voice. It's up to you to set a positive, happy tone for training.

What to expect from your Pet

The amount of patience and firmness you will need often depends on the breed of dog. Investigate the breed you want before you get him. Breeders, veterinarians, trainers and owners can tell you what it's like to train different breeds. Some breeds learn quickly; others require more time. Some breeds need a strong hand; others require only gentle correcting. With all breeds, being too hard on a dog will only teach him to fear you and others. He can become fearful or aggressive. On the other hand, if you're not confident in your authority, the dog may try to take over. Enroll in an obedience class for advice and support in the training process.

Praise and correction

Praise when right. Correct when wrong. It's as simple as that. A correction is the word “no,” delivered in a firm voice. Always follow a correction with praise as soon as the mistake has been cleared up.

Make a habit of pointing out your dog's good behavior as he wants to please you, so he'll remember to do it again. When he does something wrong, correct him, show him the right thing to do, then praise him. For example: Puppies must chew, but when they chew on your shoe or hand, correct them; then give them chew toy.

Don't hold a grudge when the dog misbehaves. He will forget his mistake in a few minutes. If you stay angry he'll just wonder why you aren't friends anymore.

Every civilized dog should know at least certain Basic commands

HEELING

You are taking your pet out for walk or exercise, he should walk correctly with leash under your control is the purpose of Heeling. While walking, your pet’s right shoulder should be in line with your left knee, the leash should be shortened by coiling and held in right hand, at the same time your left hand, palm downward, holds the leash closest to the dog’s collar to exert control and correct the direction. As mentioned above keep the dog on your left, walk at a brisk speed. Dog will charge ahead or will walk or pull behind, even may stop for sniffing the ground, then jerk the leash with your left hand, call his name and command HEEL in sharp voice to bring him in line with you. Everytime your pet lags behind, moves ahead crosses you or stops jerk the leash and call his name and command “heel”. After certain number of corrections your will learn to adjust his steps with your movements.

SIT

Your pet dog is walking on your left side, coil up the leash fairly short in length to your right and keep your left hand free, stop and command the pet “SIT”. He will not follow since he does not understand, so pull the leash upward with your right hand while pressing the palm of your left hand on pets hind quarters to make him sit on its haunches. The pressure should be gentle, smooth and constant for a little while and then release command heel and continue walking. This may be repeated several times in a single course of walking. In a week or ten days he will understand and start obeying. If it performs well do not forget to pat or praise and reward.

STAY

Your pet dog is walking on your left side, coil up the leash fairly short in length to your right and keep your left hand free, stop and command the pet “SIT”. He will not follow since he does not understand, so pull the leash upward with your right hand while pressing the palm of your left hand on pets hind quarters to make him sit on its haunches. The pressure should be gentle, smooth and constant for a little while and then release command heel and continue walking. This may be repeated several times in a single course of walking. In a week or ten days he will understand and start obeying. If it performs well do not forget to pat or praise and reward.

TURN

While walking with your pet one has to turn right or left and also backwards. In order that pet dog should turn with you without making you fall over him, he needs to be trained. You are walking straight the dog on your left, leash coiled in your right hand and left hand loosely handing the leash though ready to stiffen and when needed. Now you have to turn left to alert the pup, command “Heel” tighten the leash in your left hand (to prevent the pet clashing with you) turn on your left foot and take the right one to the new direction.
